For the last 5 years we have been attending Oktoberfest in Mt. Angel Oregon to celebrate all things German. If you enjoy music, beer, brats, and festive dancing, then this is the event for you.
We have a long history of traveling to Germany and Dave has attended Oktoberfest in Munich at least 5 times. So finding a very authentic one just 3 hours from our home base was a blessing.
We started out year 1 with just our friends Nancy and Brian. It was a memorable weekend and over the years have added to the mix. Most recently we attended with 9 other RV’s over the 4 day festival.
Oktoberfest can’t really be explained, it must be experienced. It involves great food, beer and lots of dancing and singing.
Mt. Angel actually closes the schools for several days leading into the event and transforms the town into even more of a Bavarian Village with huge Fest tents all over. It helps that the town sits below a monastery and the monks make a fine beer to enjoy throughout the celebration.
Authentic German bands lend an air of authenticity along with all the locals dressed in lederhosen and dirndls, you almost forget you are in Oregon.
There is nothing that explains it more than seeing a few pictures…
If you are interested in attending Mt. Angel Oktoberfest I recommend reserving camping accommodations early. We stay in a private field just a few blocks from the event. There is also a field next to the main tent for camping and several parks around the area.
The website for Mt. Angel Oktoberfest is full of details with dates, camping and other parking options.
We love to go Thursday and enjoy the smaller crowds as we warm up our dancing legs for the rest of the weekend.
While in the neighborhood don’t miss a walk up to the Mt. Angel Abbey for beautiful views. And just below the Abbey is the Benedictine Brewery serving their very own Belgian style beers.
Another nearby attraction that is worth planning for is Silver Falls State Park. The Ten Falls Trail passes by 10 different waterfalls including underneath 4 of the falls. It is a great park with beautiful scenery.
Don’t miss a stop at the Mt. Angel Sausage Company for some great authentic food.
Hope we see you there next time!
