Borrego Super Bloom – A Pictorial

According to Wiki the definition of a Super Bloom is a rare desert botanical phenomenon in which an unusually high proportion of wildflowers whose seeds have lain dormant in desert soil germinate and blossom at roughly the same time. The phenomenon is associated with an unusually wet rainy season.

My definition is just Amazing! We had heard for a couple of years about Super Bloom, but it isn’t something you can time. Many of the places that go through a super bloom are hot and not where we want to stay during the bloom season. We have spent time in Borrego Springs over the last 5 years and love it in the winter. But super hot weather is not my thing and we had already moved to the coast in San Diego by the time the bloom happened.

A day trip was the best way to experience the bloom and we were not disappointed. It was hard to believe as we came over the mountains and looked out over the Borrego Valley and could see the color. Previous trips this looks a bit more like the desert of a Star Wars movie. But the yellow, purple and orange can be seen from miles away. A trip to main street and the visitors center provided a map of the various areas and what was peaking on the day of our visit. The pictures speak for themselves.

If you ever have a chance to see a Super Bloom, do it. Mother Nature is so amazing.
