As schools let out and the families start to travel it is rare to get a hike all alone in any state park, let alone one as beautiful as Red Canyon. But at Red Canyon we enjoyed almost ever single hike by ourselves. This little stopover on the way to Bryce is well worth the time!
We stayed a few nights at Red Canyon Campground, a National Forest campground. We had beautiful views and were able to hike right out of our site.
After a few days there we moved out to a boondocking site Toms Best Spring Road. We had better cell service to get our work done and still had easy access to Red Canyon.
Red Canyon has a great visitors center and parking along the road for picture opportunities. I found most people stopped their cars, took a few photos and went on their merry way.
We picked out a few great hikes and went way back into the canyons. Our favorite was Castle Bridge that went up and down about a million times…. just when we thought we were headed back into the campground it would veer up again. The views and up close look at the hoodoos was wonderful. And again, not a sole around. In 4 hours of hiking, we saw 4 people.
We did several hikes right around the visitor center at sunset for good light. Pink Ledges Trail, Arches and even drove to Podunk.
Yes Podunk really exists – named after an indian who got lost for several days in the forest according to one of the signs (couldn’t seem to confirm that anywhere). Now there is an old guard cabin that can now be rented out. It sits in a beautiful valley and would be a wonderful weekend getaway!
We found some geocaches as well as good 4 wheel drive roads. And all the while we had easy access to Panquitch for grocery shopping and the occasional meal out. We had some delicious home cooking at Bryce Canyon Pines – really took the edge off after a long day of hiking!
